Q. Write a brief note on architecture of Delhi sultanate.

Ans: Delhi Sultans had a great taste for architecture. Architectures were a blend of Indian and Islamic styles It witnesses the evolution and development of Indo-Islamic Architecture by synthesizing geometrical shapes, calligraphy, inscriptional art etc. Architecture has its both religious and secular structure.

Features:

1. Architectures of Delhi sultanate was a mixture of Indian & Iranian style- i.e. central Asian Islamic style.

2. Buildings constructed with the material of Hindu temples.

3. They used pointed arched roofs instead of square roofs.

4. During sultan period geometrical designs began to be used for decoration.

5. They used Quaranic Ayats for religious and decorative purpose.

6. Use of several types of colored stones like red, light black, yellow and white marbles

  • During Mamaluk’s period Qutubminer, Quwat-ul-Islam & Nasir-uddin Muhammad was build, Architecture during Khilji Period Dargah of Hazrat Nizam – ud – din Aulia & the Alai Darwaza .Architecture during Lodi Period the Lodi Garden, Moti Masjid in New Delhi, and The tomb of Sikandar Lodi was built.

Thus in this manner the Delhi sultanate introduced a new kind of architecture model in India.
